At the same time, the illustrations are daring us to look closer at our own world and lives. The contrast makes the reader want to examine things a bit more closely and quietly, lest we disturb anything. The colour of the fallen marble shines in the penciled world, adding a shimmer of light to whatever is around it. Each blade of grass each flower petal each buggy eye or antennae or pincered leg lends a sense of wonder and smallness. As we travel through this well-imagined landscape, we can’t be passive viewers. But the moral, pertinent though it undeniably is, cannot possibly overtake the fascination in the building of this exquisite world. Yes, there is much to learn about the human world here. But will the Spiders’ plan to build a vast fortune continue? As the excitement of discovery and “newness” builds, of course there is one creature who hatches a scheme to take advantage of his fellow creatures for his own benefit.
